Blog #3 Cherry Blossoms

After moving into the IRC (International Residence Chuo), I was able to meet many other international students through the initial dorm orientation and various activities. There were plenty of opportunities to make new friends with students from all over the world, especially since the USA population was incredibly small. The dorm also hosted events to help everyone get used to the building, like tours, kitchen demonstrations, and more. After meeting our roommates and making new friends, the other UHMC (UH Mānoa Chuo)

students and I went to karaoke with the new friends we’d made so far. It was very exciting and fun with such a big group. While we were there, I discovered that many karaoke places offer free soft drinks and even other activities depending on the franchise. We stayed for a couple of hours before rushing to catch the last trains back to the dorm.

As cherry blossom season began, I took a solo trip to Ueno Park to see the cherry blossoms.

It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen, and that day I finally understood why people are so obsessed with cherry blossoms. While I was there, I also visited Shinobazu no Ike Bentendo Temple one of my first temples ever, and the first one I visited in Japan. It was incredibly beautiful, and I was able to enjoy the temple atmosphere while also trying food from the nearby stalls.

Not long after, I went to explore Tokyo Tower. I had always wanted to visit after growing up seeing it on TV, so I was extremely excited when I finally arrived. The tower was breathtakingly beautiful, and I spent an ungodly amount of time taking pictures and admiring it. Going inside was just as fun, and the views were just as amazing. Overall, I had a really great time.

Soon after, the IRC hurriedly planned a cherry blossom picnic for all the new residents to experience cherry blossom hanami for the first time. The Japanese residents kindly gave a presentation on the history and cultural practices of hanami before we set off. It was a wonderful experience, especially since the dorm provided mats, drinks, and some food for us to enjoy. It was also nice to discover that Chuo University’s Tama Campus has a large field of cherry blossom trees, making it a must‑visit spot in spring.

Overall, this was the most beautiful spring I have ever experienced. I may have gotten sick soon after all the outdoor activities, but it was worth it for all the amazing experiences.
